Penderecki Concerto with the Exeter University Symphony Orchestra
19th March 2013. 7.30pm. The Great Hall, Exeter University.
Today my performance of Penderecki’s Viola Concerto with the Exeter University Symphony Orchestra.
The Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki (1933-) wrote his viola concerto in 1983. It was commissioned by the Venezuelan government to mark the bicentenary of the birth of Simon Bolivar. It was first performed on 24th July 1983 in Caracas. Like the violin concerto and second cello concerto which preceded it, the viola concerto is in one movement.
In 1984, he wrote his Cadenza for solo viola which is based on the material from the concerto but which does not actually appear in its entirety in the concerto.
