Mihailo Trandfilovski is one of the most celebrated Balkan composers. The performance of his Dance Ascent and Song Rotation was framed by Mendelssohn’s Octet, written when the composer was 16, and his D minor Concerto of 1822. This was his response to the Baroque and Classical orchestral works that his teacher, Carl Friedrich Zelter, was reviving in Berlin. Peter Sheppard Skaerved has reconstructed Mendelssohn’s first version of this piece. The extraordinary artist, Joanna Jones, created a new work to be hung behind the stage for this concert. She says ‘… the motion of the viewer’s eyes following the forms and structures of a painting’s surface repeat in a different time and space the movements which created the painting … as it passes on some of its mystery in its own language…’
