Gordon Jacob and Telemann Concertos with the Winchmore Strings
16th March 2013. 7.30pm.
Winchmore Hill Methodist Church
Today I performed Telemann’s Concerto in G major and Gordon Jacob’s Second Viola Concerto with the Winchmore Strings, conductor Philip Gibson.
Gordon Jacob wrote this concerto, for viola and strings, in 1979, more than 50 years after his first concerto. It was written for the Lionel Tertis competition and was dedicated to this great viola player. Jacob (1895-1984) was a prolific English composer who grew up in London, studying and later lecturing at the Royal College of Music.
The prolific German composer Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) wrote more than 100 concertos including his Viola Concerto in G major. One of the earliest concertos written for the viola, it is a popular choice for violists today.
